Former Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora, has died in a heartbreaking incident that is sending shockwaves across the nation.

Multiple reports allege that a private hospital in Abuja refused to perform an urgent, life-saving surgery because the senator could not immediately pay the $15,000 (₦23 million) demanded upfront. Moments later, he was pronounced dead.

The tragedy has ignited nationwide outrage, with many questioning how a former senator — once part of Nigeria’s political elite — could be denied critical care over a bill.

“This is more than a personal loss; it’s a damning indictment of our healthcare system,” one observer said.

The incident has intensified calls for urgent reform to address:

The declining state of Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.

The profit-driven nature of essential medical care.

The widening gap between leaders and the citizens they serve.

Critics warn: If a senator can die this way, what hope is there for ordinary Nigerians?
